Last Flight Trailer

Over the last couple of years Sunset Studios has been helping out Damon Keen with his short film Last Flight (official site here) and about a month ago we completed it, actually we completed twice (always remember to save your work kids). Since then Damon has been entering it in film festivals all over the place (keep an eye on the blog) and Richard has been putting together a trailer (below). A lot of this film was shot here in the studio and we also did the grade, not a easy task (read about it here). Anyway we’ll let you know where you can expect to see it as soon as we know, ’till later,
Z.

The first annual Halloween short film contest.

Every year, for the past three Halloween weekends, we’ve treated you to a night of guts and gags, giggles and gore, with some of the most horrific (and sometimes just horrifically bad) fright-flicks from around the world.

But in 2011 we’re doing things a little differently, because as well as our normal line up of blood splattered treats, this year we want you to add your own fiendish films to the nights entertainment. So, to get the severed head rolling, we’re inviting you to participate in the first ever ‘Halloween Short Film Contest’!

To be a part of Halloween history, get your friends together and film your very own mini-gore opus. We’re looking for films of no more than 10 minutes in duration, with a theme of – wait for it – zombies! Get them to us no later than the first of October (to give our carefully hand-picked team of judges time to pore over your masterpieces) then sit back and wait for Halloween night to see your work (and those of your buddies) on display on the Sunset Studios big screen.

Still not convinced? Then how about a nice shiny trophy and a tasty selection of horror related prizes (a veritable hamper of horror, a goodie bag of gore!) for the winning film? I know, it all sounds just too good to be true doesn’t it?!

So get your undead pals together and get filming – and to help you on your way here’s a couple of handy links:
http://www.halloween-website.com/fake_blood.htm
http://www.videojug.com/webvideo/how-to-do-zombie-make-up-for-halloween

And don’t forget to check back on the Sunset Studios website for updates and more Halloween goodies in the lead-up to the biggest and best Halloween yet!

(Any questions or submissions please send through to info@sunsetstudios.co.nz)

SATURDAY 30th OCTOBER from 6PM to 2AM

6PM: BRAIN DEAD
“There’s something nasty in Lionel’s cellar – His family!”
8PM: SOCIETY
“In Beverly Hills, what you fear is only the beginning.”
10PM: DEMONS
“They will make cemeteries their cathedrals and the cities will be your tombs.”
MIDNIGHT: BURIAL GROUND
“When the moon turns red, the dead shall rise!”

It’s hard to believe that almost a year has gone by since we all gathered together in the haunted wastelands of Horrendorson, to shriek with laughter and scream in fright at the some of the maddest, weirdest, wildest horror films from around the world. Well now it’s that time again! And this year, Halloweens gonna get a little gooey, as a veritable barf bag of zombies, beasties and what ever the hell that thing is at the end of ‘Society’ is, line up to make you gag (mostly with laughter…) and cringe your night away. So grab your favourite bean bag and steal your nerves for a ghoulishly grizzly flick – or show you’re truly got the right stuff by sticking around for the whole night – because this year, Halloweens gonna get a little bit messy…

FilmCAD 2010

I teach a paper at Unitec officially called “LAND 7230 CAD Studio” however it’s more affectionately  known as Film CAD. I’ve been teaching this paper for over 10 years now! Students have 3 major hand-ins; a story board, draft video, and the final video. While doing the paper, students get a crash course in film theory, green screen compositing (shot @ Sunset) and learn various software packages including Vue Infinite and Finalcut Studio. Each student is responsible for their own video (I tried group projects once, never again) and they have to do it in one semester. If your keen on seeing the results of all this (18 in total) you can go to Youtube or watch them below (at the end of the first clip there should be a menu with the rest);
