FilmCAD 2010
Jul 2nd
I teach a paper at Unitec officially called “LAND 7230 CAD Studio” however it’s more affectionately known as Film CAD. I’ve been teaching this paper for over 10 years now! Students have 3 major hand-ins; a story board, draft video, and the final video. While doing the paper, students get a crash course in film theory, green screen compositing (shot @ Sunset) and learn various software packages including Vue Infinite and Finalcut Studio. Each student is responsible for their own video (I tried group projects once, never again) and they have to do it in one semester. If your keen on seeing the results of all this (18 in total) you can go to Youtube or watch them below (at the end of the first clip there should be a menu with the rest);
The Earlybirds Shoot
May 15th
Tim Van Dammen and Tim Flower were in the studio a couple weeks ago shooting a video for The Earlybirds song ‘Can’t Live Without You’ . I popped in to see the chaos that Tim (V.D) described as the “wettest shoot ever”. The water spraying off the drum kit was spectacular and it was all being captured on a Red (camera). Check out some of the photos Anton Falco ter Veer captured here, some awesome stills which include a couple behind the scene photos of the setup. The edit has really done it justice too, love the lens flare effect.

May 4th
Three music videos made at Sunset have been nominated for awards in the Juice TV Awards 2010. Tim van Dammen’s clip for Artisan Guns made it in for the best group, in fact he and Tim Flower (DoP) have five videos nominated; Best Electronic – Kids Of 88, Best Rock – Luger Boa, Best Solo – Anika Moa, and Best Newcomer – Kidz In Space. There’s also Luke McPake’s vid for Lisa Crawly that was shot in the studio for the track “Back to you” in the best break thru artist section (check it out in our video section). And finally theres one directed by our own Duncan Eastwood, for the metal band The Mark of Man edited by Richard Thomas and Shot by Anthony Plant and Myself. So the moral? Shoot at Sunset Studios and you might get nominated for awards

Taaz Shoot
Apr 8th
On Tuesday we had Tazz [myspace] in the studio shooting his new music video. The video was being shot by Creative Bite a design studio attached to Natcoll’s Auckland campus, and staffed by graduates of Natcoll’s courses working in a 3-month Graduate Work Experience Internship. The Studio Manager Ken Waller said “For me, the day couldn’t have gone better – it’s a great setup you have there at Sunset!”. I look forward to seeing the video, and we’ll hopefully be able to post it on the site as soon as it’s done. You can check out some of Ken’s photos here.
2010 and the ‘Feedback’ shoot
Feb 3rd
Happy new year to you all! The year is off to a busy start, Great Southern TV just finished shooting scenes for “Feedback” (directed by Matt Heath) at Sunset (check out some photos here, here, and here). I’m about to get my teeth into post work for Last Flight, Duncan is still pushing forward with a comedy script (I’m not sure what I can and cant say so I’ll say nothing more) and the bookings are coming in for more music videos and FX work. I look forward to hearing from you, ’till then,
Z.
Sunset on TV and other stuff
Mar 15th
Well I have been a bit slack at posting news here. There’s a good reason; I’ve been meaning to update this site to make it easier to post these updates, but I haven’t. Okay so its not the best reason.
Some brief news: On Sunday morning Sunset was on the tele! Check it out below. January and February where very busy at Sunset. The Music video we did for 8 Foot Sativa got banned on youtube. Last flight (a short film) will be spending some time shooting at Sunset and I’ll be doing a few FX shots and grading it. And finally, something really, really big is in the pipeline but I can’t say a word at this stage. Stay tuned,
Z.
Brandspank Shoot
Jul 24th
The brandspank crew were in this week shooting a music vid with my favorite toy: a Red. Check out some of the pics here. The greenscreen is getting some good use, so far 4 shoots, 3 of which featured cars. The next project will be to get some green flooring so we can get some keyable longshots. Stay tuned, I’m planning on testing out a AJA ioHD with a Sony EX1, I’ll post something about it here. ‘Till later
Z.
