FilmCAD 2010
Jul 2nd
I teach a paper at Unitec officially called “LAND 7230 CAD Studio” however it’s more affectionately known as Film CAD. I’ve been teaching this paper for over 10 years now! Students have 3 major hand-ins; a story board, draft video, and the final video. While doing the paper, students get a crash course in film theory, green screen compositing (shot @ Sunset) and learn various software packages including Vue Infinite and Finalcut Studio. Each student is responsible for their own video (I tried group projects once, never again) and they have to do it in one semester. If your keen on seeing the results of all this (18 in total) you can go to Youtube or watch them below (at the end of the first clip there should be a menu with the rest);
The Earlybirds Shoot
May 15th
Tim Van Dammen and Tim Flower were in the studio a couple weeks ago shooting a video for The Earlybirds song ‘Can’t Live Without You’ . I popped in to see the chaos that Tim (V.D) described as the “wettest shoot ever”. The water spraying off the drum kit was spectacular and it was all being captured on a Red (camera). Check out some of the photos Anton Falco ter Veer captured here, some awesome stills which include a couple behind the scene photos of the setup. The edit has really done it justice too, love the lens flare effect.

May 4th
Three music videos made at Sunset have been nominated for awards in the Juice TV Awards 2010. Tim van Dammen’s clip for Artisan Guns made it in for the best group, in fact he and Tim Flower (DoP) have five videos nominated; Best Electronic – Kids Of 88, Best Rock – Luger Boa, Best Solo – Anika Moa, and Best Newcomer – Kidz In Space. There’s also Luke McPake’s vid for Lisa Crawly that was shot in the studio for the track “Back to you” in the best break thru artist section (check it out in our video section). And finally theres one directed by our own Duncan Eastwood, for the metal band The Mark of Man edited by Richard Thomas and Shot by Anthony Plant and Myself. So the moral? Shoot at Sunset Studios and you might get nominated for awards

The Sunset Newsroom
Apr 27th
Hi All. First up, thanks for all the great feedback about the site. It’s been a few late nights but shes’s almost done. The latest addition to the site is the Sunset Newsroom. Here you will find all the latest news related to the film industry, including; jobs, technology, gossip, films, events, festivals, blogs, etc. It works by reading RSS feeds of selected sites eg Seek, The Herald, Creative cow, etc (see a complete list here ), so if you want your site added send me a link, description and the authors name (if it’s a blog). You’ll also notice on the right hand side of the Sunset webpage a box that lists all the latest news articles for quick access. Theres also a shout box on the site now, this is a little box (also on the right hand side of the website) that you can post random messages or even chat with others on the site in real time! If you have any feedback or suggestions feel free to send it through. ‘Till later,
Z.
Sunset turns two!
Apr 17th
It’s our birthday! This time 2 years ago the Sunset crew were busily preparing for our opening night. Setting up tables and chairs, organizing catering, booze, and a big sound system. We had spent 6 months building the studio, so for us it was a really big deal. Since then we’ve had a lot people though the place and Sunset has become a well known player in the local industry. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the film makers that have used the studio, and all those that have helped us out with the fit out and day to day running of the place, without you we wouldn’t be here today. Happy Birthday Sunset!
Taaz Shoot
Apr 8th
On Tuesday we had Tazz [myspace] in the studio shooting his new music video. The video was being shot by Creative Bite a design studio attached to Natcoll’s Auckland campus, and staffed by graduates of Natcoll’s courses working in a 3-month Graduate Work Experience Internship. The Studio Manager Ken Waller said “For me, the day couldn’t have gone better – it’s a great setup you have there at Sunset!”. I look forward to seeing the video, and we’ll hopefully be able to post it on the site as soon as it’s done. You can check out some of Ken’s photos here.
Got Talent?
Apr 5th
Here at Sunset we often get requests for skilled crew, and work wanted, in fact we get a lot. So instead of forwarding it all to Duncan I decided that the new website needed a place for the local community to freely post their details instead of sending it all to us, the result is the Sunset Forum. At the time of writing this it’s brand new and looking rather empty, so please take the time to make it a great resource. You can sign up for an account (free) on the right.

I intend to post all sorts of stuff on a regular basis. I’m hoping to update this webpage in the future [this story was originally posted on our old website], however the old server is not up to it, so make lots of bookings so we can get a new web server, and a audio rig, and a edit suite and a … and … and…..

2010 and the ‘Feedback’ shoot
Feb 3rd
Happy new year to you all! The year is off to a busy start, Great Southern TV just finished shooting scenes for “Feedback” (directed by Matt Heath) at Sunset (check out some photos here, here, and here). I’m about to get my teeth into post work for Last Flight, Duncan is still pushing forward with a comedy script (I’m not sure what I can and cant say so I’ll say nothing more) and the bookings are coming in for more music videos and FX work. I look forward to hearing from you, ’till then,
Z.
Halloween 2
Oct 16th
In 2008 we challenged you to spend Halloween night sampling the most horrific (and sometimes just horrifically bad) fright flicks from around the world. And now, it’s that time again!
Really looking forward to this years event. Dont forget your beanbag.
